Naturally Occurring Compounds in Cocoa Tied to Potential Diabetes Benefits

Journal of the American College of Cardiology

There may be good news for the more than 20 million Americans living with diabetes. New research links cocoa flavanols - the naturally occurring compounds in cocoa - to potential benefits for those affected with type 2 diabetes.

A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology revealed...

  • That consuming a cocoa flavanol-rich beverage daily may have the potential to positively impact blood vessel dysfunction associated with diabetes
  • A 30 percent improvement in blood vessel dysfunction after 30 days - especially beneficial given the typically poor vessel function associated with type 2 diabetes.

Poor blood vessel function is recognized as an early stage in the development process of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. These vascular impairments can eventually lead to heart disease and stroke, the cause of death for two-thirds of those who suffer from diabetes.
